Wombourne 5k Time Trial - Hitch Free Racing

*

Ah well with a field of 15 the innuagural 5K time trial was a fairly low key affair but with a number of the particpants from BCT and BRAT possibly a little more competitive than fun. The Overall winners for the day were Alistair Gorrie in a time of 17:59 and Becky Francis in 21:04. Both respectable times but both ripe for the beating on the summer event, watch out for the forthcoming events listed in May, June, July and August.

Ioc Admit Endurance Events Could Be Postponed

The International Olympic Committe (IOC) have revealed they will be forced to postpone high profile events such as the marathon, road cycling and the triathlon at this year's Olympic Games if pollution in Beijing does not improve.

The admission that the IOC will devise what a 'plan B' for some endurance sports comes a week after Haile Gebrselassie, the marathon world record holder, said he was unlikely to compete in the event at the Games because of worries over how the conditions would affect his asthma.

An IOC medical commission investigation into air quality in Beijing in August last year found that the health of athletes was "largely not impaired" by the conditions expected over the same period this summer. Read More at the Times Website

Worcester Duathlon Wet, Windy And Well Populated

On the worst of days in an area which is prone to water logging and after the race referee has decided to shorten the bike course to one lap, 53 people donned shorts and went out into the cold and rain to face the Worcester Duathlon.

The absence of the top guys from the start list with exceptions of James Ratcliffe and Ian Coupland meant that for the men overall position it was a two horse race, quickly whittled down to one shortly after the first run. James came trotting into T1 with a comfortable lead and we suspect wasn't really challanged throughout as the gap was about the same when back in T2.

Off on the Run Ian Coupland didn't really stand much of a chance given they're both pretty solid athletes, those sorts of gaps are hard to make up.

In the ladies, Michelle Parsons went out for a convincing lead and sealed the deal on the Bike leg, followed up by Rachel Hobbs her Worcester Tri Club Team mate.

Overall a great day out, photos and results are in the usual places and I am currently encoding the video footage from Michelle Parsons for a good look around the bike course.

2005 Review:

First time the WTC had held the event and all in all it was very good. Excellent parking and transition. The run was 2, 2 mile laps of quite a flat course with view points to where you are running so you can gauge your progress. The bike was 2, 9 mile laps on an almost flat course. I was trapped a few times between bikes and cars on the A44 alas such is life. The final run was one lap of 2 miles with wobbly legs. Running back through the bikes comming into the finish again easy to judge your position. On the whole an enjoyable race that I shall do again. Kent Randall

Police Take On Ultimate Triathlon (wigantoday.net)

It's a sporting challenge verging on the insane, never tried before - but for an elite police team, including Wigan's Phil Unsworth, it is an exciting mission that must be completed for the charity.

The chief inspector and his super-fit colleagues are in training for a mind-bogglingly epic triathlon which involves cycling from John o'Groats to Land's End, running from Land's End to Dover, the swimming the Channel to Calais!

Crazy? Well the only saving grace is that the 1,421-mile, non-stop, week-long slog will be done in relay, with team-members snatching short naps and grabbing quick meals in support vehicles and boats while some of their 20 colleagues continue on the next stretch. Read More at External website

Good Turnout As New Triathlon Club Created

A NEW sport is on the scene after the Shetland Triathlon Club was formed at a public meeting last night.

Around 15 people turned out to hear more about the sport and discuss possibilities for short triathlon events to take place in Shetland this summer.

The enthusiastic meeting concluded with the adoption of a constitution for the club and the formation of a committee who will now lead the sport for the future.

There is no shortage of local expertise in the three triathlon disciplines of swimming, cycling and running, that were well represented at the meeting.

Members of the Shetland Wheelers Cycling Club, Shetland Amateur Athletics Club and local swimming clubs were present, along with other individuals who had varying levels of experience of half or full marathon events.
